Vitamin D3: Measures the level of Vitamin D in your blood. Vitamin D supports bone and tooth health, immune function, and tissue growth. D3 (cholecalciferol) is made when skin is exposed to sunlight. Deficiency can be caused by limited sun exposure or absorption disorders like Cystic Fibrosis or Crohn’s Disease. Symptoms include tiredness, weakness, aches, pain, and frequent infections.

Vitamin B12: Essential for healthy red blood cells and nerve function. B12 is not produced by the body and must come from food. Deficiency can cause macrocytic anemia and symptoms such as fatigue, pale skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, or numbness in extremities. Causes include malnutrition, alcoholism, and absorption disorders (e.g., Celiac, Crohn’s).

Calcium: Supports strong bones and teeth and is vital for proper heart, muscle, nerve, and blood function. A small amount circulates in the blood and is measured in this test.

Iron Studies (fasting required): These tests assess how much iron is in your blood and how it’s stored:

  • Ferritin: Indicates total iron stores. First to drop in deficiency.
  • Serum Iron: Measures iron in the bloodstream.
  • Transferrin: Protein that transports iron; may rise with infection/inflammation.
  • Saturation Ratio: % of iron bound to transferrin; calculated from iron/TIBC.

Zinc (Plasma/Serum): Needed for immune health, metabolism, wound healing, and growth. Deficiency may stem from stress, low dietary intake, or absorption issues (Crohn’s, pregnancy, alcoholism). Symptoms: infections, poor healing, rashes, hair thinning, or reduced taste/smell. Toxicity from supplements may cause nausea, cramps, anemia, and low HDL. Note: Plasma Zn is default, but may be done as serum depending on the lab.

Magnesium – Serum: Supports bones, muscles, heart health, and nerve function. Testing is used to check kidney health and gastrointestinal conditions, or uncontrolled diabetes. Deficiency may occur due to malabsorption, malnutrition, diarrhea, or alcoholism.
