ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic hormone): ACTH is a hormone produced in the anterior pituitary gland in the brain. Its main function is to regulate levels of the steroid hormone cortisol, which is released from the adrenal gland.
An ACTH test measures ACTH levels in the blood and helps detect diseases associated with too much or too little cortisol in the body. Possible causes include: pituitary or adrenal malfunction, pituitary tumour, adrenal tumour, or lung tumour.
Cortisol: Cortisol is a hormone that affects many different functions in the body. It helps control blood sugar levels, regulate metabolism, reduce inflammation, and support memory formulation. It also helps control salt and water balance and maintains blood pressure.
DHEAS: This test measures Dehydroepiandrosterone sulphate (DHEAS) in the blood. DHEAS is a male sex hormone produced primarily by the adrenal glands. It's also produced in smaller amounts by the ovaries or testicles.
Elevated DHEA can be caused by adrenal or ovarian tumours. Excess levels may lead to early puberty in young boys or the development of male characteristics (e.g., deepened voice, excess facial/body hair) and missed periods in women.
The DHEAS test is often ordered to evaluate adrenal function or when symptoms of excess androgen (male sex hormone) production are present. In women, this may help identify causes of infertility or lack of menstruation. In men, it is often paired with testosterone tests.
